'The Order of the Hatchet'
The Order of the Hatchet (Orden de la Hacha) is a military order of knighthood for women in Catalonia. It was founded in 1149 by Raymond Berenger, count of Barcelona, to honor the women who fought for the defense of the city of Tortosa against a Moor attack.
Tortosa had been taken from the Moors by Don Raymond as part of the second crusade. However on the 31st of December the Moors returned and laid siege to the city. The Inhabitants became desperate and finding the Earl unable to break the siege turned their thoughts to surrender. The women, hearing of this and being determined to prevent the disaster threatening their city, put on mens clothes and charged forth, forcing the Moors to raise the siege.
